3B Design Studio

SCI-Arc – Spring 2019
Instructor – Mira Henry

The 3B Studio introduces students to the comprehensive design and development of a large scale, building on an urban site. The studio focuses on the design, development, and tectonic logic of the building envelope and its ability to articulate contemporary formal organizations. Assemblage versus monolithic form, surface versus mass, iconicity and image, compositional logics, tectonic assemblies, and materiality; all constitute a range of concerns in the design work. Students articulate and argue for conceptual and disciplinary positions in relation to issues of AMIGAA (mass, interiority, ground, aperture, and articulation) and constitute enduring, evolving issues that the discipline of architecture continues to actively interrogate and change. While these issues recur over time, staking a contemporary position about how they are expressed and ultimately constructed provides the opportunity to pursue new territories. One could argue that it is the constant reexamination of these issues that enables change in architecture, moving it forward as a speculative project.
